{May 11, 2015}   Dare I Say It

I have had my frogs for 1 year this month. I got them for mothers day last year.I started out with 2 Roxy and Trevor then added a third last year sometime. I also redone their tank. I put in different rocks and some little figures decorations along with the pots. IMG_20150511_204610 This was feeding time tonight. That’s what is floating at the top of the tank.

I haven’t gotten to spend to much time watching them lately with the holidays and then all that has been going on this year. But my little bitty has taken a interest in them more. She pulls her little chair up and makes sure it is pushed in good. Then she stands up on it and watches them. We feed them together and she just chatters away to them. They have gotten to where they are starting to come to the front of the tank and swimming around when they see her even when it isn’t feeding time.

I am sure I will be spending more time watching them once I get everything going with school and things. I will probably be studying in the living where they are. I am going to be moving things around as well. They will be in a better spot to watch them.

This one I think was taken a few weeks a go. 20150306_020929Yeah because the pot in the middle back is standing up. I don’t know how they got it knocked over. Crazy things move or knock everything over. The poor turtle was sitting up as well they knocked him over right away. When the pot in the back was sitting up and the turtle in there, my kids said it looked like a scene from the first Mario Brothers game. Where you could go down in the cans and fight off the turtles. The frogs would get down in the pot then pop up out of it.

They really are such low matnice pets I can’t believe how easy it has been to take care of them and keep them alive. Easier than beta fish even. I think I have cleaned the tank 4 times. We have went through so many beta fish it isn’t even funny. We had I think 6 in just a few months. The kids just won two the other week and with in a day one got killed. My little bitty tried to give it a bubble bath and poured body wash in the vase. My sons is still alive but he put it up on a shelf on the wall where she couldn’t reach it. But even the others we didn’t do anything to them. We put them in a 2 gallon tank feed them. They died. Best Christmas present ever, NOT. But my frogs really are a pretty awesome gift. And great for someone who don’t have a lot of time to keep up with a pet but wants one.

{May 26, 2014}   Roxy and Trevor

I finally got my mothers day gift this weekend. I didn’t get it mothers day because I had to decide what I wanted and the kind of set up I wanted. I found a nice glass 5 gallon tank online and got it last week. Sunday me and the two older kids went to the pet shop and got the frogs.

I talked to the guy there and he said basically all I needed was to put them in a tank with spring water and they would do great. Thats what I done, so far they are doing good. They didn’t eat last night but probably from being moved and in a new place. Today they have been active. They have been swimming around the tank hiding in the pots and around them and exploring. I don’t have a lot in the tank. I got one live plant a couple of the small terracotta flower pots and the bases to sit them on. The posts to hide in and the bases to put their food on to feed them. This way it don’t get in the rocks and they have a hard time finding it.

The kids were trying to pick out names for them and boy did they come up with some names. They wanted to give on my dad’s name and one baby girl’s dad’s name. R.C’s name. But they don’t really know R.C by his first name because all his friends and family call him by his middle name. Only time he goes by his first name is at work. I don’t think they really thought of it. I asked them why they picked them two names they just said because they go together.

I am not 100% sure but I think I picked out a male and a female. It is really hard to tell by looking at them and in the tank at the store. I didn’t even think they had any until I asked the guy. I he reach into the fish tank a moved this little thing they had in there and they all scattered around the tank. They were in the back. I know that the males are smaller than the females. There were two left sitting together in the corner one was bigger than the other so I took them two. I figured they were together and stayed together they would get along pretty good in the tank. I am hoping since one was larger than the other they are mates and not the same. One could be younger but guessing they are the same age.

I named them Roxy and Trevor. I don’t know why it came to me the other day when I was thinking about names. I liked Roxy and Trevor off of the show Army Wives. I have looked at other names and tried to come up with two I like but haven’t really found any. I liked freckle but I don’t know what name I would put with it for a boy.

{May 14, 2014}   Belated Mothers Day

I hope that everyone had a happy Mothers day this year and got to relax and spend time with the family. Mine was pretty good surprisingly since father of the year was offf for the weekend. But I let him pretty much handle everything with the kids. We hardly ever get up early but everyone was up before 9. My big boy made me breakfast in bed with some help. They brought me stuff that they made and gave me and we just hung out for a little while. I decided to take them to the flea market to get out of the house and do something. It was about lunch time so I told them to get ready and have lunch. No one seemed to get in a hurry and me and little bitty ended up taking a long nap instead.

I have been wanting to get another pet. I really want another dog but don’t have the extra money to really take care of another dog with the vet bills shots and things like that. I have been looking at guinea pigs and things in cages but really don’t want the mess and smell that come with them. I didn’t get guinea pigs the last time because I didn’t want to mess with all the shavings and things that you have to put in the cage and the smell. They would be mine so I am the one who has to take care of them. I can’t make the kids do it if it isn’t theirs. I am one too who if I get a pet or let the kids have a pet all research has to be done on it and it has to be taken care of properly. Not just through it in this gave because it fits and do what has to be done to get by. They have to have the proper size cage and set up the food that is best for them not just what ever is easiest. And if the cage has to be cleaned every day to keep it clean not smelling and the animal clean then that is what gets done.

Just like when we had the ferrets I know alot of people who just buy the little cages and keep two and sometimes more in it. Really it isn’t even a good set up for one much less more than that. We had one in addition to the larger cage we had. But they didn’t stay in it. I had it incase we went on a trip and took them had to leave the house for some reason and take them with us and things like that. When we moved I put them in it for temporally til we got moved and could have their big cage. And I could see why people would say they stink. They did not stay clean in the little cage the little cage was a mess to try and take care of and keep clean. They smelled you couldn’t keep them from smelling. I could tell they weren’t happy in it either. One reason I finally said ok and told the kids we had to find them a new home. It wasn’t right to them and they needed to be back in their big cage right a way before they got sick or something. I knew it was going to be a few months before we were going to be able to move.

I decided I wanted African Dwarf frogs! african_dwarf_frogsI seen them before at the pet store when we were looking at ferrets and things. I wanted them then but didn’t get them. I had too much other stuff to take care of and deal with at the time.  When I was looking at best low maintenance pets they came up on one of the list. I hadn’t thought about them in a while. I did a lot of research on them back then and have been doing more the last few days. They say you need a gallon of water per frog but then other places say 2. they are use to living in puddles so I figure they can do ok in a gallon but 2 would ideal for them. I want about 3 to 4 of them. I am looking at getting a 5 gallon tank. I figure with 4 even that gives them a gallon and a quarter each should do good with that. But I am trying to decide if I want to do the 5 gallon tank and 4 frogs ora 3 gallon with just two. But I know they are what I want. That is my mothers day gift. I just have to figure out how many I want what kind of tank I need and what kind of set up I am going to do in it. Then I will get it. I also have to find the frogs because they didn’t have them at the pet store when we went.

I am leaning toward the 5 gallon tank and starting out with 2 and then maybe adding more. I want a male and female. See if I can breed them so I think it would be better to start with just two but a bigger tank so I can ad to it later. Thy say a lot of times the eggs don’t survive and if they do the frogs don’t. You have to have a really good set up in a different tank. But I want to try. I have a tank for that part of it. It’s just getting the big tank and set up. But I am also waiting until I get some more done around the house so I can decide where I want it and make a spot before I get it. I’m going to do some more research as well to make sure I am not missing anything.
