{August 9, 2014}   Lesson # 1

The kids are so thrilled, they got to sit down and do their first lesson yesterday. My big boy has asked me every day for weeks when we are going to start homeschooling and why we can’t start today, how many more days over and over all day. They are going to each be making a blog of their own to post about what they are learning and the things they are doing. I figure this will get them use to using the computer and help them start typing. It will hopefully let them interact with other kids who are homeschooling as well. They can give it to friends and family and let them see what they are learning and doing in “school”.

I wasn’t going to start school yet and we really haven’t per say. I just keep hearing from my son all day every day when we are going to start how many days is it why we can’t start today. Once we decided to get the computer and I got it home and set it up I decided to go ahead and give them their first lesson. I figure this way they will have the bog up and running by the time we start school. It will give them time to play with it and learn how to do things.

I gave them 10 vocabulary words to look up and told them I wanted them each to add 5 words of their own to it as they worked. I also gave them 30 questions to answer, some were simple one or two word answers others had two or three parts or two or three different answers. I then gave them 5 one page reports to write. I gave them two weeks to finish it in. They sat down and worked on it for hours Thursday night together. Then my daughter worked on it for a while after her brother decided he was ready to do something else. I was very impressed with him for sure because he sat and worked on the same things helping her and her helping him for hours. I know he has a hard time just sitting still for a hour or so most the time much less as long as they did then.

The first report I told them to write was on what site they wanted to use for their blog and why. The second was to write about their self. I asked them to write one about why they liked the idea of homeschooling this year and what they were conserved about homeschooling this year if they had any. I also told them to write one about the kind of things you would find on their blog what it would be about.

By tonight my oldest had it all done. My boy on the other hand didn’t work on his but he was not feeling good today and had gotten sick. He did want to work on it at one time today before he got sick but we had some other things to do and I asked him to wait. He only did the vocabulary words I gave him he hasn’t added his 5 and he has only answered about half the questions and not done any of the 5 reports. I am not to worried I was hoping they would take their time to do it so they wouldn’t keep asking me when we are going to start and give me time to get ready. I am not sure he will be able to finish it alone it as it maybe a little advanced for him.

Father of the year thinks it is really advanced for both of them. But out of all the questions my oldest only got a couple wrong and couldn’t find the answer to one or two. There was others she got other answers on than what I was looking for but they were technically still right.

I want them to know what kinds of blogs there are, I want them to know about safety when posting and corresponding with people, I also want them to know that you can be help responsible for what you post. Be it putting other peoples stuff up and calling it yours or not noting where you got it or talking about people or putting their personal stuff on there with out them knowing. I asked them things like who the first bloggers were and about the code of conduct and who came up with it and why he did. Just a lot of different things like that. I think my oldest enjoyed it and she is ready to make her blog. She keeps asking me when she can type her reports up and I didn’t even tell her she had to. I didn’t ask them to type them to turn them in because they are going to transfer them all over to their blogs one they are up. No need to type them twice.

We also talked about pin names instead of using their real names and they were trying to come up with names for themselves. My son thinks it is so cool he gets to have a pin name. They learned about them in school last year I guess. He wanted to be Peter Pan last night. We shall see if it sticks. My oldest wants hers to be Ann I Mal. They learned about anonymous bloggers as well.

I am so glad they are liking it. I am going to have to sit down and help my big boy on the rest of his and try to help him understand it. But it will wait until Monday it’s the weekend I have hardly slept in days. It is now 4:25 am and I am supposed to be leaving at 12 pm to take the kids and a friend to the flea market. I want to go too but I want to sleep again too. I just can’t get out of this funk.

{August 9, 2014}   A New Computer

I haven’t done a lot for the kids the last few years with everything going on. We do little things here and there but haven’t done anything really nice for them. We use to take a trip to one of the theme parks or give them so money to get something nice they been wanting for a while if we didn’t go. I just haven’t been able to do it with moving and bills and not working. Since we decided to homeschool there are some things that we need to be able to really do good. I have been picking up things at thrift stores, the auction, yard sales and other places the last few weeks. But we really needed a computer. The last desk top I had I got in 2004. It has been dead for a few years now. I say a few but it more like 5 or so. Me and father of the year have lap tops that are newer but still not that new. From like 2007 or so, I don’t let them on my computer because when I have tried to let them use it in the past keys have come up missing and they are always bouncing it around. I am worried it is going to get broke and then we will have none at all.

They credited us a months rent because of the roof being messed up for so long and we have 3 pay day in the month. I can have all my bills paid and September and Octobers rent paid by the 1st of September. I have all the bills caught up and paid as well. I went and got a new desk top and a nice printer so the kids have somewhere they can sit down do their work on and I can print all the stuff we need for school and things. I didn’t break the bank and buy the best of the best or even the middle of the road even. I got a decent all in one and the warranty on it because I know my kids and if it can happen it will. I spent way more on a printer than I thought I would. but still not horrible on it. I got the warranty on it too. First two things in my life I think I bought a warranty for. I learned my lesson after two broke tablets with in a week of each other and only a couple weeks after Christmas and not buying them.

I was ok with spending more on the printer because I think in the long run it will save me money. I was debating between the inkjet all in one, laser all in one or something that took toner. I was leaning toward toner because I know you can get a ton of prints before you have to change the toner out. But the guy said it isn’t as good for color and that the toner was a lot. Lot more than I thought it would be. But still I think probably be worth it with all the copies and prints you could get. But I wanted something that would be decent color copy too. So he showed me a inkjet that will print 2000-2500 pages. That should last me at least 6 months to a year. If I was just printing our normal stuff that I need to print sometimes it would last me forever. But with doing the homeschool some of the things I need to print are 50 to 100 or more pages. Some are less and once I get going I can reduce the things that I print because I will have a better understanding of what is really needed what can just be used online without printing it out.

I think it was a good choice for us. It is something that everyone can use and that we will keep and have for a really long time. Because unless it just dies and can not be fixed it will be used. Just like the last one. My lap top is supposed to get fixed this weekend because I did something and screwed it up. Once it is I will keep using it until it dies and can’t be used anymore. I don’t have money to go out and buy the best of or the newest just because it came out. Nor do I really want to. I think it is a waste to just go get something new because it is a little newer when what we have will do the same thing. I am cheap if I don’t have to buy something I won’t and if it isn’t in the budget I am not like a lot of people who will take it from somewhere that it shouldn’t be taken from and buy it anyway. We will just do with out. Just like with the printer. If I got the one that made less copies I would need ink more often. I may not have the money to go out and buy more ink every few months. This way I can pretty much buy it once maybe twice a year and not have to worry about it. When it goes out or starts to it will have to wait until I can get it. But at least I will know ahead of time so I can make sure I have it or save a little here and there to get it.

My big boy is so funny. I told them we were going to go down to the big flea market this weekend. So he says to me can we all have $5 or $10 each to spend when we go? I said do you know how many $5 and $10 I just spent on that new computer for yall the other day? He said no how many. I told him and said a lot. He looked at me and said wow really? I said yes really. He said oh ok so can we have the money to spend when we go or not? I love him he just don’t get the concept of money paying bills what things cost. We will be working on that this year in math. I need to look for some other things for school. Maybe I will give them $5 each and tell them that it needs to be spend on things that we can use or need for school and let them help get stuff. They get to help pick it out and they can be learning how money works.

{July 26, 2014}   It’s Unofficially Official

Yesterday we went to the local school a couple houses down to see about my oldest taking a gifted class if we decided to home school. They told me they weren’t sure how it all worked and that the person I needed to talk with was in a meeting. I had somewhere to be so I told her I would come back today. She said she talked to them and they said I had to start at the school board and work back to them. I told her that was fine I would go there next week. She said she was going to call them. She did and the lady said that she was going to email her a paper over for me to fill out and then they could just send it in so I didn’t have to go all the way down there. She sent it right over she printed two out and gave me. I filled them all out and gave them back. So they are now officially with drawn from school and considered to be homeschooling.

She didn’t find out about the class my oldest wanted to take so I called them as we were walking home and they are telling me she can’t do that until she is a grade up. I have to figure out if there is a way we can do it because we are going to be doing that grade at home but if she was in school she would be a grade behind where we are going to be starting. I am going to wait to get the letter back from them before I dig into it more. I think I am just going to go back to the store talk to them and fill out papers and send her as long as they take her. The laws say they have to offer it and let her come.

It is crazy because I feel this is the right way to go with them and probably the best for them. But I still don’t want to tell everyone what we are doing because i don’t want to hear it from everyone. The biggest thing that bothers me is something that shouldn’t bother me or even make a difference at all. It is my life and my kids life and it is up to me to make the best decisions for them and do what is best for them. But I keep second guessing myself and dreading hearing it from everyone else. But I guess that is what happens when your are The Girl. You always deal with that nagging voice in the back of your head. No matter how much you try to ignore it or not listen to it. It is always there and always telling you your not good enough or you can’t do it.

So for now it is official with the school board but, it is unofficial with everyone else.
